The word “wine” may be an archaic one, but a new wine store in Walmart’s Wal-Mart Supercenter is set to be the first to bring a premium brand to the U.S. store.
The wine shop, dubbed Wine & Spirit, opened its doors at the retailer’s retail center in the nation’s largest Wal-mart Supercenter in Walmarts Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas on Wednesday.
The wine store, named for the company that created it, has a menu that features more than 40 wines from around the world, including a selection of premium wines.
The store also sells other premium products like china wine and specialty wines from countries like Germany and Spain.
It is the first time a wine store has opened in the United States.
Spirit is owned by the same company that owns Wal-Marts wine and spirit stores, and the wine store is expected to open by fall.
Spirits CEO, Andrew Hochstein, said the store has a goal of selling 500,000 cases of wine each year and will offer a selection that is similar to the wine offerings in Wal-marts own stores.
“Wine is a great product for people to buy, but we want to make sure it’s not just a novelty,” Hochsteins company said on its website.
A similar wine shop was also opened in Chicago earlier this year, but it is not yet known how the Wal-Martin Supercenter stores will compete.
Other retailers that have opened in this country include Costco and Target.
